HELWEL HIKE 2010
Saturday 19th June
meeting at
St Adhelm's Church, Bishopstrow
near Warminster in the county of Wiltshire
from 10 a.m. for a 10.30 start
The walk is mainly on the Wessex Downs, including part of the Wessex Ridgeway, crossing two Iron Age forts, and passing two (unexcavated) Barrows. Part of the route follows a road where an army of conscript farmers marched to face an army of professional soldiers for a battle which changed the course of European history (this is your Pub Quiz puzzle!). The route also goes along the River Wylye, one of the great trout streams.
The walk ends at The Ginger Piggery, Boyton, where there is an art and crafts gallery, and a tea shop.
Total distance - approximately 10 miles. Morning and afternoon walks approximately equal. The afternoon walk offers a choice: either with a detour to a beautiful church; or a shorter version cutting out two miles.
Lunch at The Angel Inn, Heytesbury
Transport between Bishopstrow and Warminster railway station is being arranged.
An early evening barbecue will be held in the gardens of Mill Barn, Bishopstrow.
